Neligh Library Home

This blog serves as a journal starting in June of 2006 when I moved back to Nebraska with my three young children. Starting over with a new career in a new place can be overwhelming but I have focused my energy on the renovation of this beautiful building that will someday be a home for my family. The process is liberating and therapeutic. Since most of my friends and family are located around the world and are not here to watch, this blog will serve as a window to the journey.

Princess Bedroom

My 7-year old daughter has been such a sport and I can't wait to surprise her with her bedroom transformation. This room started out with massive duct work and the main water line running through it as well as a large hole in the floor and wall. She has never complained about the looks of the room and now it is fit for a princess, which is right up her alley. The carpet will go in next week and eventually I'll scrape what's left of all that yellow paint from her door and refinish it.

What a Mess We Made!

Too bad my 3 year old son wasn't here today to see the backhoe at work! We FINALLY got someone to dig up the water line and sewer. Dave and I felt like tunnel rats digging in the trenches and under the foundation. It reminded me of the Cu Chi tunnels in Vietnam I visited last summer. We quickly moved the main water line out of the bedroom and will replace a good portion of the sewer line which still had the original Orangeburg pipe. Hopefully we can have it all filled in tomorrow which will surely disappoint all the "Looky-Lous".

Family Room Comparison

The family room looks great and is ready for the cherry laminate wood flooring. The picture on the left is of the same space when it was still an office. The window on the right is now in a bedroom, the angled wall is gone, while the straight part was extended for the bedroom.

Bedrooms & Water Woes

My shoulders are so sore from all the painting! Other than some touch-ups, two bedrooms are ready for flooring. The third bedroom is on hold until we can get someone with a backhoe to come out and dig up the water line so we can move it out of the bedroom. We've been asking different companies and people for well over two months and the responses are the typical, "Yeah, we should be able to do it next week...."
Frustration has set in because it's the one thing holding us up from finishing. I don't think we'll be moved in before school starts but hopefully before Labor Day Weekend.

Bathroom Progress

Lots of changes in the last three weeks. The kids' bathroom is starting to look very inviting. I can't wait to try the aero-therapy tub soon. Again we'll put down a heated tile floor (yes, I know, spoiled kids) which will feel great in the winter. Hard to appreciate with the current July temperatures. The vanity is an old buffet that we modified to fit a standard double sink.
