Neligh Library Home

This blog serves as a journal starting in June of 2006 when I moved back to Nebraska with my three young children. Starting over with a new career in a new place can be overwhelming but I have focused my energy on the renovation of this beautiful building that will someday be a home for my family. The process is liberating and therapeutic. Since most of my friends and family are located around the world and are not here to watch, this blog will serve as a window to the journey.

More Starting Point Pictures

These pictures illustrate nicely the space we're working with upstairs. The 14 foot ceilings and large windows prove to be a challenge in designing bedrooms and a kitchen. Right now we're removing paneling from the original bathroom (note the wonderful bright peach color), determining what areas of plaster need to be repaired, and putting the old closet back in place.

Renovation Has Officially Started

Well, the city finally moved out of the library space they were renting and the kids and I went in to survey the area. We looked under a layer of commercial carpet AND asbestos tile to find the original wood floors and took out some of the cheap bookshelves to find the original color of the walls. The pictures are of me and the kids putting holes in the wall where a closet was originally but they dry-walled it shut to make more room for shelving along that wall (we're going to restore it). The green was original and went up about 2/3 of the wall with a lighter green to the ceiling (look at the picture from 1915). The yellow was later and we found a very bright peach over a lighter green in the other large room. We were disgusted to find that when they covered this closet, not only did they take all the trim around the edge but they also swiped all the floor trim on the inside. Fortunately, we found the original door in the basement of the new library. We're still missing one of the original doors in the building and I'm afraid during previous renovations anything of value was taken and is now incorporated in someone else's home around town.
